Before the beginning of these gala performances, the inhabitants of Kishinev, after the leaders of the Republic and the city, were able to get acquainted with the exhibitions of the works of arts and crafts, children's art etc. In the same place, in the alley of the classics of the national literature, you could look through the book novelties of the local publishing houses and mix with several Moldovan literary men – the participants of the City Day, ready to assist admirers of their creative work to purchase a desirable book with the poet's autograph.

Those who preferred having another way of spending time (in particular, examining the stands of “Bukuria”, “Zorile”, “Steaua”) to presence at the poetical festival, could be doubtful about some ideas read aloud and spoken out by some competitors to occupy places in the alley (as monuments). But some phrases could please both staunch defenders and formidable opponents. It was a question of the decision, adopted the other day: to declare the last year of this century as a Year of M. Eminesku (on the occasion of his 150th anniversary) and arrange a high-level celebration of the writer’s jubilee. However, it is important that this anniversary, name and the works of the genius would be never used by anybody with selfish ends, as it sometimes happens.

Meantime, the City Day was going on; one of its most important events had to be the opening ceremony of the reconstructed section of Cuflea street – from Stephen the Great Boulevard up to the viaduct, connecting the centre of the Moldovan capital with Botanica sector. In this direction, along the main transport city thoroughfare (Stephen the Great boulevard, transformed into the zone of impromptu concert stages, retailers’ stands, different competitions, exhibitions, chess and wrestling tournaments) rushed the mass of the celebration participants.
