Mazarache Church

This is the first stone construction of Kishinev. Its building was completed in 1752. Mazarache Church belongs to religious constructions that represent the ancient Moldovan type of church. This type appeared at the end of XIV - beginning of XV and became one of the unique phenomenon in the history of Moldovan architecture.

The plan of Mazarache Church like those of other edifices is clearly divided from the East to the West into three parts: altar, nave and vestibule. Semicircular apses side with the nave from the North and from the South, the altar also looks like a large apse. Smooth contour of the apses, the corners of the bell tower, cut and partially orbed, create the impression of gentleness of forms. Interior rooms have vaulted-domic ceiling, their height increases to the altar part, where there is the rich iconostasis.

There is a legend about the creation of Mazarache Church. A denunciation was written to the high-ranking official Mazarakii. He was ordered to go to the Turkish governor to Bendery immediately. At that time, those who was taken to the Bendery Fortress did not come out alive. Going to the court, Mazarakii sweared, that if he stayed safe and sound, on home-coming he would built a church in the place of the destroyed cloister. He was acquited and kept his promise.
