Chapel, erected in honour of Bulgarian militiamen

The end-XIX century remarkable monument of Moldovan architecture is a small memorial complex - an obelisk and a chapel, erected in the square of Bulgarian Militiamen. In this place, on 12 April 1877 Russian Emperor Alexander II read a manifesto about the declaration of war to the Osmanli Empire; this day was the beginning of the last Russian-Turkish war, that was concluded with the Russian victory and formation of Bulgarian state. The parade of the army before its forwarding to Balkans took place. The chapel was erected in honour of this event.

Constructing the chapel, the architects tried to underscore the greatness, importance of the historical event, honoured by this monument.

The building of the chapel is the octagon, every verge of its front is formed of arches with the carinate end. The dome on the octagon is a light drum, crowned with a tourch with bulbous head; it underscores the peculiarities of the construction architecture. The exterior of the chapel is festive, picturesque. The interior is deprived decor elements, plasticity in its decoration is achieved at the expense of chiaroscuro, geometric form of the plan and deep bays.

Not far from the chapel, in the centre of the square, in commemoration of the events of 1877 and 1966, on the eve of the 500-aniversary of Kishinev celebration, a 16-metre granite obelisk in the form of the needle was set up (architect V.L. Dementiev, painters V.S. Novik and I.P. Tsekhanovich).
