Armenian Church

One of the patterns of the Armenian architecture in the territory of the Republic of Moldova is Blessed Virgin Church, built in Kishinev at the very beginning of the XIX century. The plan of the edifice in the form of the nave with semicircular apse and the extension of a two-tier bell tower from the west show that the style of the church building is typical for the XIX century. Probably, this church was erected on ruins of an ancient Moldovan temple. Like the whole of Kishinev, in 1739 the old church was, apparantly, burnt down, and in 1803 the new one, Armenian, was built in its place.
The main volume of the church is the elongate parallelepiped, orbed from the eastern side and the high bell tower above the western vestibule that is concluded by the hip floor. A lancet arch of the arpetures of the southern side-altar with the decorative columns, clean laying of the walls, stylization of the decor, creat the Armenian architecture image.
After 1817, a portico was built to the vestibule of the church (the three-arch one from the South and the one-arch from the West and the East). It much differs from the church architecture with its style. The type of portico arch, in the form of lancet arches and original Arabic columns and capitals, is especially notable.
The walls, overlaps, abutments of the church are made of stone and brick, plastered, the foudations are made of quarrystone. The portico walls look very elegant; they are made of hewn stone of light and dark-grey colours. The exterior of the Blessed Virgin Church makes an impression of solidity. The church building with auxiliary rooms form the architectural ensemble. The church is protected by the state.
