Chisinau center - photosFragments of History of Stephen the Great Boulevard
Alexandrovskaya Street from the centre up to the beginning (the early XX century) Presumably, the avenue appeared in the place of the road, connecting
the camp of the Russian military settlements, dislocated in the east of Kishinev in 1789,
with the city.
Since 1878 up to 1924 it was Alexandrovskaya Street. Two monuments of Russian Emperors Alexander I and Alexander II were put here.
Since 1924 till 1944 it was called Alexandry cel Bun Street in honour of a Moldovan Gospodar (1400-1432).
In 1931 the street was divided into two parts: the southern part of the
street from the square, that was called the United Nations' Square at that time, up to
Armyanskaya Street, it kept the same name, and from Armyanskaya Street it had
the name of King Karl II.
You can compare how the central street and the appearance of the city as a whole had changed to the end of the XX century; it looked like this at the moment of the USSR collapse (but Bell Tower was built later).
